The Safest & Riskiest Small Businesses
Patrick O’Rourke, a CPA in Washington DC, has posted a list of Safest & Riskiest Small Businesses on his BizStats.com website. Patrick compares relative percentages of profitable and loss for businesses in a given industry. A high percentage of profitability is defined as “safe.”
“Surveyors (# 1) came out on top for the second year in a row … while hunters & trappers came in dead (no pun intended) last.
Non-store retailers (# 112) includes the numerous multi-level sales and marketing ventures which publicize high profits, but are near the bottom of the list for the likelihood of achieving profitability.”
Among the safest small businesses to start by Patrick’s calulations are: surveyors, optometrists, dentists, certified public accountants, and school and charter bus drivers.
Among the riskiest small businesses are: pet breeding, computer and electronic products, Video tape and disc rental, and nonstore retailers.
