1898 Spanish American War Telephone Tax Goes Digital

From the pages of CNet we have another example of why Americans don’t vote for new taxes, even if the tax is limited to just a few years:

A report prepared by the Congressional Joint Committee on Taxation proposes extending a 100-year-old tax on phone service to some or all data connections. The tax originated in 1898 to pay for the Spanish American War. After being repealed, it was reinstituted to pay for World War I and was eventually set at 3 percent. (more…)

Nonpayment of State Sales Taxes

The Arkansas Department of Finance and Administration (DFA) has padlocked and hung a very ugly sign on the gates of a waterpark located in North Little Rock for nonpayment of sales taxes. Allegedly, the waterpark failed to submit state sales taxes collected for one quarter of 2004. Many Arkansans have already purchased season tickets for 2005 season at the waterpark. The future status of the waterpark is unknown at this date. (more…)

Arkansas Tsunami Tax Incentive Credit (ATTIC)

Gov. Mike Huckabee announced Wednesday, January 12, 2005, that any contributions made this month for tsunami relief efforts may be claimed on state tax returns filed this year for tax year 2004. Huckabee held a news conference at the state Capitol to announce a program known as ATTIC — Arkansas Tsunami Tax Incentive Credit.
